Dr. Ram Avtar joined the UNU-ISP as a Research Associate in October 2012. His research focuses on assessing the impact of global climate change and weighing on adaptation and mitigation options to offer scientific solutions. Dr. Avtar is recipient of the Japanese Government Scholarship (MEXT). He received his PhD from the University of Tokyo. His doctoral thesis entitled “Multi-sensor Remote Sensing Techniques to Manage Cambodian Forests for Implementation of REDD+ policies” explored gaps in existing biomass estimation practices and provided practical and policy relevant solutions to strengthen prevalent practices. Prior to joining UNU-ISP, Dr. Ram Avtar worked as Post-Doctoral Researcher with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). In JAMSTEC, his research contributed towards terrestrial ecosystem of peatland forests of Borneo. He completed his Master degrees (Master of Science and Master of Philosophy) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. He also possesses a Postgraduate Diploma in Disaster Management from Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi. Dr. Avtar has presented his research in numerous international conferences and extensively published papers in peer-reviewed international journals as well as books. His research interest includes application of remote sensing in forestry and REDD+ related issues and he sees greater potential in space technology to offer sustainable solutions to pressing environmental problems of the world.
