With climate change and other environmental threats endangering the lives and livelihoods of people in the poorest countries, sustainability issues cannot be separated from peace and security issues when we consider international society in the twenty-first century. It is with an awareness of the inter-linkage of these issues that the United Nations University Institute for Sustainability and Peace was established to integrate the former UNU Environment and Sustainable Development Programme and UNU Peace and Governance Programme.

With the aim of implementing broad, cross-cutting research and education, UNU-ISP will weave elements of human rights, risk management, and governance into the base issues of Global Change and Sustainability, International Cooperation and Development, and Peace and Security.

UNU-ISP will focus in particular on the Asian and African regions that are most at risk from global change and regional conflict. Long-term personnel development will be achieved through international joint research projects, symposiums, seminars, and training sessions, as well as by conducting joint education for sustainable development efforts in these regions.

Further, building on the joint graduate school programmes that the UNU has been implementing in partnership with Asian and African universities and research institutions, including many institutions located in Japan, a UNU-based graduate school will be established in the near future. UNU-ISP will develop a graduate programme which awards UNU accredited degrees in collaboration with Japanese universities and others

And with the aim of inaugurating Rector Osterwalder’s “twin institutes” vision, UNU-ISP will work in partnership with the UNU Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA, in Accra, Ghana) on implementing joint projects related to education for sustainable development and by organizing joint public events.

UNU-ISP aspires to be a research institute that collaborates not only with universities and research institutes, but with wide regional and international networks. I sincerely call upon your active support and cooperation in enabling the development of the UNU Institute for Sustainability and Peace.
